A washed-out bridge, unexpected guests, and a foolish illness Not that the mumps is foolish, but really. Hasn’t everyone had it? Not Caroline Bingley, apparently.
So, the Bingleys and Mr. Darcy are stuck at Netherfield Park, along with guests invited by a mysterious relative known only as Aunt Jane. Who on earth is that? No one has met her, but Emma Woodhouse claims that she is no one to trifle with. Darcy has his doubts.
Later, when Elizabeth Bennet and her sister arrive seeking refuge, Darcy becomes even more suspicious. It’s as if someone is thwarting his plans to leave, while at the same time, encouraging the tender desires of his vulnerable heart.
Meanwhile, the rain continues to fall --- and Emma is eager to play matchmaker. This annoys Darcy, for she intends to match someone else with his beloved Elizabeth.
Miss Bates is gleefully warbling Christmas carols, and Tom Bertram is scheming to fleece them all at cards. What else can Darcy do but laugh and fall into step with whatever Aunt Jane has in mind?
Laura Hile’s The Christmas Matchmaker features your friends from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Mansfield Park.
