#1 I was 11 when my father died. I was in school when one of my father’s female cousins came to take me to see him in the hospital. He had an operation for a kidney problem, but nothing further could be done. He died before I arrived.

#2 My father, an Italian citizen, fought in the First World War. He was sent to Greece by the Italian consulate in order to study, but he never finished his studies because of the racial laws. He took part in all the demonstrations and parades organized by the Italians.

#3 I was in Salonika during World War II, and I remember how different my life was there compared to the other Jewish children in the city. I was the only one who was allowed to go to the Italian school, and I enjoyed the feeling of being different from the others.

#4 I lived in a Jewish neighborhood in Salonika, and I spent most of my time with Jews. At home, everything was kosher, because all the shops in the area were kosher. But at school, the food wasn’t kosher, so I didn’t have a problem with it.
