“It’s for your grandmother. She wouldn’t want to see you alone,” my grandfather, the old coot, prodded me. “You need a girlfriend or two. Three would be best though, if not more.” He was in his robe, and his gray hair hadn’t seen a comb in weeks.

I sat across from my grandfather, trying to enjoy the little time we had left while I ate breakfast. I knew that I’d have to leave soon, and I wasn’t sure when I’d make it back to him.

“Grandfather. I am a young man. I just finished high school, soon to take the adventurer’s exam. I need to focus on making it into a good dungeon college.” I picked at my food with my chopsticks.

The old man always had his mind on women. But he’d already had his adventures. My eyes flickered to my bedroom door and my thoughts to one of the posters in my room.

When I was younger, I had idolized my grandfather. The poster was an old style of art, one that hadn’t been used for at least twenty years. But on it was a man garbed in high-level, blue robes with a headscarf that masked everything except his eyes.

Those eyes had a fierceness to them that I had only seen a handful of times. The last was after my mother had disappeared into the dungeon along with my father and their party. He’d gone in alone to bring her back, but instead, he’d recovered the entire party’s bodies.

After that, he and all but one of my grandmothers had disappeared for a time. It was after that settled that my grandfather started to train me, giving the lost boy I had become a purpose.

I’d been living with my grandparents since then. But that was behind me. Now, I was looking towards the future, one of becoming an adventurer and diving deep into the dungeon.

And despite the trauma of losing my parents, I wanted to become an adventurer like almost every kid in my high school. And I had a grandfather who had once been a professional adventurer.

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 1

My sword and knife flashed before me as I flowed through one of my grandfather’s form drills.

Sweat beaded down my forehead and splashed into the air as I spun in the field. The morning sun was bleeding through the gym’s windows, and the dew on the grass was catching it, filling the ground with golden shimmers.

Sweep, stab, turn, and block…

My steps picked up pace with each motion, going faster and faster. I realized at one point that I was moving faster than I ever had before.

Our party had just hit level four, and we’d worked for every bit. We had been grinding away in the dungeon every afternoon after classes with Crimson every morning.

Thankfully, no more attempts had been made at Fayeth’s life, letting us focus on progressing our party. I’d been anxious at first, waiting for something to happen, but the past few months had been smooth.

Almost too smooth.

Although, Crimson had not relented in her quest to push us to our limits and beyond them. Class A was at least half a level above class B and C. I was already stronger than the girl whom I knew was Anti-Elf, but I wasn’t yet able to outmatch the upperclassmen.

And until we figured out more, we’d all agreed to leave them be and just keep an eye on them.

According to Crimson, the father of the girl in class B ran the major manufacturing company that made CIDs. The watch-like devices allowed humanity to understand their growth and changes as they dove the dungeon, and they were a huge part of what made adventuring possible. After we’d pieced that together, his motivation to attack the elves and disrupting negotiations got clearer.

The elves had their own CIDs, and those were plant grown. They were far easier to produce, and if the elves ever shared that technology, he could easily lose his business.

It was a petty reason to go after Fayeth.

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 2

I looked up from my CID, not recognizing the area I’d driven into with my party and grandmother.

Grandma Yui was driving us in a van back to their home. After my mother had passed, I had been raised in my mother’s house. My grandparents hadn’t wanted to disrupt my life any more than was necessary after such a big loss.

So, when a giant swooping roofline rose over a large surrounding wall, showcasing a massive estate that loomed over the other houses, it caught Harley’s attention. “Wah! Is that it? You said we were almost there!”

“I swear. You are worse than a small child on a car trip.” Desmonda rolled her eyes and glanced up at me to see if I was going to intervene.

Truthfully, Grandma Yui was already going to make her pay for her antics throughout the trip, so I didn’t want to add on.

While Harley sat in the middle row with Charlotte, I sat in the back where Des and Fayeth had made themselves comfortable leaning against me. I was truly blessed with the two beauties on either side of me. Des settled back against me, her purple hair falling to cover her red eyes that came with the demonic bloodline in her family, even if hers was inactive. She still had curves that could make a succubus jealous.

“My Adrel had this under control. There’s no need to question him.” Fayeth didn’t even open her eyes.

I leaned down and kissed her sun-kissed skin, bronzed from the harshness of her world. It contrasted beautifully with Fayeth’s blonde hair and lithe body.

“Harley, deary.” Grandma Yui’s sweet tone made my spine crawl. “Why don’t you come with me when we get to the estate? I have a surprise for you.”

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 3

The world rushed by as I held on to Fayeth. Both of us were tucked under one of Neldra’s arms while her sword was out in the other hand. For all the trouble Kaiming went to in order to trap us, they weren’t showing a huge presence as we exited.

As if reading my mind, Neldra spoke, “Did you forget about your grandparents? They stayed on the floors below to make sure that no one could run away with anything.”

Neldra jumped across sand dunes, passing right by the monsters before they’d even fully realized she was near.

“Unhand him!” The Harem Queen exploded in a column of blue fire and shot ahead of us with a flourish as she tore the side of her dress so that she could move more freely.

Helen’s mother had the same fiery red hair as her daughter, and she did look wickedly intimidating as she leveled her flaming blue sword at us. Even though she was the wet dream of many teens in high school, I had zero interest in her at that moment. Instead, I saw her as a tyrant.

“Hold on.” Neldra squeezed us tight to her side as she sped up even more as she covered the last several platforms. Her sword flashed out in a blur of attacks that drove the Harem Queen back for just a split second. That moment was all Neldra needed to slip into the seventh floor.

The floor was typically another floor of endless sand and bright light. But as we entered, the entire space shone red, and gore covered the ground.

My grandfather flicked his blade as he turned with Neldra’s sudden arrival. “Haha! Come to join us for the fu—” He noticed our expression and his laughter died.

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 4

Crimson was still pouting as she pulled at her long, black hair, tightening it into a braid while flicking a spare hair band harder than a bullet. The band bounced through three low-level dungeon monsters and back to her.

“I mean, really, why did it have to destroy the potion’s effect?!” She played with the hair band and put it on her braid after checking to make sure it had survived its passage through the monsters.

I gave her a sidelong glance as we walked through the dungeon on our way back to the Nagato Estate. “Limit break must not like the dye.”

Crimson played with her hair while monsters died all around us. She was in a bit of a mood.

“I don’t see what the big deal is—your hair is beautiful.” Fayeth smiled at our teacher.

Crimson looked at Fayeth’s hair, which looked like spun gold. Then she glanced over at Ami’s, which was a pristine white, before looking back at her own black hair with a frown. “I finally got Ken to pick a really pretty rose petal red. It’s a really rare hair color potion or I’d just drink one every day.”

I didn’t bother correcting her. She had placed a number of potions to change her hair color out for me and tried them as an excuse to kiss me.

It had been blatantly obvious that she wanted red when she showed up with twenty potions that were all different shades of red. Although, I would have said they were all pretty much the same. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between most of them.

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 5

The rest of my Haylon class was milling about, ready to start as the rest of my party and I walked out of Crimson’s portal to a meeting area with class 2-A.

“Ken!” Penny’s head shot up, seeing me arrive. The blue-haired Frost Knight was always eager to see me. “You’re out of the sling.”

“Yes, I fucking am.” I rolled my shoulder. It still felt stiff from disuse. “Are we all ready to hunt some vampires?” I chuckled.

It wasn’t just Class 2-A present in the room. Class 2-B was standing around as well, with the Harem Queen lingering behind them, and then several clusters of upperclassmen were sprinkled around as well.

Ren, president of the senior class, gave me a sharp wave. “You aren’t allowed to beat us or we won’t graduate. Figured the best option was to ask to join you on this trip.”

I glanced at Crimson as she played with her long, black braid. The group around us was far larger than I’d expected.

“Oh, it’ll be fine. This event is quite large,” Crimson answered my unspoken question before speaking up to the rest of the people present. “Listen up. We’ll be heading out in just a moment. You can all set up camp at the base of the path. It’s fairly safe.”

“Crimson-safe or safe-safe?” Taylor raised her hand while speaking at the same time. The sporty fighter smirked at her question.

In fairness, it was a valid differentiation.

Crimson deadpanned at her. “It isn’t a safe zone if that’s what you are asking.”

“Right, right.” Taylor nodded, and her group started organizing who was going to be on watch. We all knew the dangers of the dungeon and wouldn’t be caught unprepared.

“Let’s get this show on the road.” Crimson seemed less than pleased with the question and ripped a portal open to compensate. It glowed around the edges, and through it there was a bleak landscape.

Labyrinth of Legends - Part 6

I stepped into the raid once again, along with the rest of Class 2-A. The raid event was the same as the last time we had visited.

Worn limestone lined the floor, punctuated by random pillars of some ancient, dilapidated civilization. Raids weren’t something to take casually even with my [Liminal Speed]. Most fights would require the whole raid to survive a variety of mechanics that involved everyone. It took trial and error to reach that level of coordination.

The ruins and the ambiance in the dungeon weren't real. Neither were the monsters. Even if there were humanoid ones, they often performed the same repetitive tasks: moving a log back and forth, swinging a hammer on an empty anvil, or sewing string through the same hole only to undo it with the next stroke.

The dungeon was a facsimile of reality. These ancient ruins didn't actually belong to an ancient civilization. Instead, they were modeled off... well, I wasn't quite sure what they were modeled off.

The prevailing theory among the nekorian, the elves, and the humans was that the dungeon was a living creature. It enticed people to enter and go deeper, feeding off the bacteria and dead cells that they left behind. There was never any dust in the dungeon, and anything left too long would be consumed by the environment.

“We are really doing this.” A hint of nerves was etched into Charlotte's tone as the green-haired druid carried Bun-Bun.

It had only been a few days since we had gone through the DPS check and the celebration of my victory. Now, my class and I were starting the raid. But this time, we wouldn't have high-powered tanks and healers on hand for us; we'd be diving into this by ourselves.
