മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യ നാവിക നോവലാണ് 'തീയുണ്ടകൾക്കും തിരമാലകൾക്കും ഇടയിൽ'. കുറച്ചുകാലം നാവിക സേനയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ച വി.എം നാരായണപ്പണിക്കർ, വിനയൻ എന്ന തൂലികാനാമത്തിൽ 1950കളിൽ കഥകളെഴുതിത്തുടങ്ങി. പിൽക്കാലത്ത്, അദ്ദേഹം ആകാശവാണി കോഴിക്കോട് നിലയത്തിൽ സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ്റൈറ്ററായി ചേർന്ന്, അസിസ്റ്റൻറ് എഡിറ്ററായി വിരമിച്ചു. നാവികസേനയിലെ ക്ലേശകരവും സാഹസികവുമായ തന്റെ ജീവിതഘട്ടം പശ്ചാത്തലമാക്കി അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയ ഈ നോവലിൽ അന്നേവരെ മലയാളികൾക്ക് അപരിചിതമായ നാവികരുടെ ജീവിതവും യാതനകളും വേദനകളുമുണ്ട്. ഇതിലെ നായകനായ ദിവാകരനിൽ നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്റെ ആത്മാംശം നിറഞ്ഞുനിൽക്കുന്നു. This is the first naval novel in Malayalam, written by V.M Narayanapanicker. Under the pen name Vinayan, he started writing stories in the 1950s, about his own experiences in the Navy, where he worked for some years. Later, he joined Akashvani Kozhikode station as a scriptwriter and retired as an Assistant Editor. The story revolves around the difficult and adventurous phase of lives in the navy. The sufferings and pains of the sailors were unknown to the Malayalis, until then. The storyteller's life is reflected in the protagonist.
