Have you ever felt like there was something inside of you, pushing your actions? A dormant beast so to speak. I know, it sounds crazy.

But, that’s the best way I could describe how I’ve felt for a long time. I thought it was normal, some animal part of the human brain that lingered from evolution. But this is the story of how I learned I wasn’t exactly human, and there was a world underneath our own where all the things that go bump in the night live. And that my beast was very real indeed.

It all started one day a few weeks into my junior year of college.

I was shuffling my notes into my bookbag after C302. Organic chemistry was shaping up to be a tough one and I had only covered a week’s worth of material at that point.

The fold-up stadium seating was a chorus of noises as they retracted and everyone hurried out of class. Feet pounded on the cheap linoleum tiles that were white with black spatters to hide the scuff marks that so commonly became part of the tiles.

I pushed all the scents and sounds to the background before the herd of students overwhelmed my senses.

My professor didn’t seem to understand that computer models took care of all the manual work he was demanding of us. Of course, the fundamentals were important, but that’s what C301 covered. I was so ready to move past the rote memorization to actually applying the knowledge.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 1

My abilities from my beast were still limited as Morgana had pointed out. It was getting in the way of my work, too. Morgana had been harping on me about my inability to shift for the last few weeks; she was getting frustrated trying to train me.

“You wouldn’t have needed that if you could shift. Because you ARE a several-ton dragon. That much tranquilizer shouldn’t put you out like that.”

There it was—right on cue.

“We’ve tried,” I growled, and the beast joined me in frustration. It had been three months of trying. Finals were just two weeks away, and I still hadn’t made any progress on unlocking more of my draconic heritage.

Sitting up, I was feeling jittery, so I went to walk around the scene of mayhem the two swamp trolls had caused, righting a dumpster as I walked.

“Oh yeah. Now no one will notice that something went down here,” Morgana snorted. “Leave it and we’ll get you back to your foxy friend. I’m sure she’s still waiting at the bar.”

“What can I say? We are two peas in a pod.”

The vampire rolled her eyes. “More like disgustingly in love. I thought a dragon would have had his prick in a dozen waiting holes by now.”

I scribbled in the last answer on the biology test, not even caring if it was the correct answer. I was ready for it to be done. It was the last thing standing between me and flying off to Switzerland with Jadelyn and Scarlett.

Jade had pulled some strings so that we could all take our finals a week early. It had been two days since the knockout fight with Nat’alet and Morgana’s disappearance, and I was antsy to go find Morgana.

My hand tensed just thinking about it, and my number two pencil crushed its tip against the page and then snapped in half. I grumbled. My new strength was great most of the time, but sometimes, it was just a pain.

The beast inside me smiled, pleased with the crushed pencil. But it thought I should just let my strength out in a mad rampage, smashing everything in sight, then burn it to cinders and piss on the ashes.

To put it gently, the beast had been extra frustrated the past two days, straining to get free and go after Morgana. I was pretty sure it would not have been okay with sitting for months before it could go after her.

“Are you okay, Mr. Pendragon?” Professor Vandal asked, breaking me from my little spat with the beast.

“Fine. Sorry, I’m just in a rush.” I did my best to smile.

“I can see that.”

I waited until he looked back down at the stack of papers on his desk before shifting my finger into a razor-sharp claw. With my golden, glittering claw, I shaved one of the broken halves back to a point and scribbled furiously, wishing I could write faster.

Jadelyn was much more composed. She sat near me, calmly scribbling on the paper. She was leaning over, her face nearly pressed against the page as she focused intently. I smiled, watching her bite her lip just a little as she tried to puzzle through the problem on the page.

Timeless, painted cinder block walls lined the lecture hall filled with fold-out stadium seating, currently packed with students. It was quiet as the professor jabbered on at the front of the class. I tried to pay attention, but it was growing increasingly difficult.

Not that the professor was boring.

I could feel the stares of my classmates. They bore into me with an almost physical presence created by the sheer number of them, but I ignored them as best as I could.

Frank chuckled to himself, some private joke in his head, before he all of a sudden was pressing his arm against mine, rubbing up against me.

I scowled, turning to face him which was beaming with amusement.

“What the heck do you think you are doing?” I whispered as Professor Turnball continued on with the lecture in Calc.

Frank gave me a flat stare in return. “I want whatever sort of mojo you have to rub off on me,” he hissed. “I’m not blind.” He nodded his head towards the rest of the room.

I sighed. The change in my notoriety among the paranormal was apparently enough that even Frank noticed. When I’d walked into class this semester, after being outed as the gold dragon, I’d immediately smelled all the paranormals in the class, and the room was packed. Far more than it had been the previous semester.

I’d pulled out my sunglasses so that I could shift and look around with my dragon eyes. Sure enough, the room was now stuffed with paranormals. And they weren’t even students I’d seen before. I had a feeling the school’s transfers had massively jumped this semester.

“Frank, there is no way that Maddie is going to let you have another girl,” I told my roommate. We’d had this conversation before; if he didn’t want to lose his dick for good, he needed to let the dream of Maddie accepting another woman go.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 4

The clinking of gold was music to my ears as I swam through the mounds of my hoard with a satisfied grumble rumbling from my chest.

“Zach! We’ve been looking everywhere for you. You are going to be late to the council meeting.” Jadelyn crossed her arms at the edge of my hoard, staring me down. “Stop playing with your gold.”

Ducking back below the mounds of gold, I sank to the bottom of my hoard and pushed myself through the coins.

It was fun. I wasn’t sure exactly how to describe it, but as a dragon, it was like a kid’s joy and a lover’s embrace at the same time. Fuck, gold was wonderful, and my gold was damn near perfect.

I popped my big draconic head out at the edge of the pile where Jadelyn stood.

My platinum blonde mate was unamused as she arched an eyebrow at me. “Zach.” There was a warning in her tone. “We don’t have time.”

I let out a low rumble, and she softened a touch, running her hand along my snout.

“If I’d known you were going to be like this with your hoard, I would have made you leave it all at the conclave.” She brushed a few coins off of me and kissed my snout. “Now come on, my big dragon mate.” She stood, waiting.

I grabbed the ledge and shifted back into my human form, pulling myself up to her stark naked. Jadelyn bit her lip, looking me up and down once before shaking her own head.

“We have to go,” she said, more to herself than to me. “Get some clothes on before I jump you. You still haven’t put a baby in any of us.”

Pausing halfway to getting clothes out of my bracer, I raised a brow. “What was that?”

“Nothing.” Jadelyn pushed my back and shooed me up the ladder that led out of the enchanted space under my mattress.

“Pregnancy is not nothing,” I shot back. I already knew that Yev and Morgana had stopped any preventative measures, and Yev had been showing up in my bedroom most nights.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 5

The wind whipped across my scales as I flew high overhead. Sabrina was doing her best to keep me cloaked against anyone or anything that might be watching.

“I can’t believe you went all the way to England to get it.” Sabrina held onto my horns as she rode me.

“Of course I did. It’s your freaking summoning circle. Now it’s going in my hoard where it’ll be protected.” My voice boomed out louder than I had intended, but that was a hazard of talking as a giant fucking dragon.

The mountain that led into Sentarshaden loomed ahead.

When I’d finished up the year at school, I’d immediately immersed myself in any distraction I could find to avoid being involved in planning or even really thinking about the chaos that was going to be The Big Day.

I’d already married Jadelyn in an intimate siren wedding, but that was private. The joint wedding with all of my mates would be anything but private.

Between the Highaen sisters’ family and Jadelyn’s family’s connections, I already knew that I was going to suffocate with guests. And then Kelly had insisted that her entire pack needed to be present.

Morgana, Sabrina, and Scarlett had at least gone easier on me, narrowing down their guest lists. Scarlett had the brunt of it as she tried to manage the logistics for the insane event.

“You are worrying about the wedding again. It’ll be fine. We get to go to Summer’s chateau tomorrow and start setting up.” Sabrina had gotten pretty good at reading my moods.

And my current mood had what felt like a panic attack coming on. So, I focused on other things.

“After the council meeting. The Wallachia are sending someone who is going to take over the whole east coast vampires. Apparently, the Gregorians did more damage than any of us realized,” I grumbled.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 6

It was time to head back and leave Summer’s mansion, and the group around me was excitedly whispering back and forth. There was some surprise for me that had them nearly bursting. Even Summer herself had walked over to the portal with us.

I was anxious as she drew closer to the portal. She was part of what kept the tamed section of Faerie stable. With her in her prime right now, she shouldn’t really be leaving Faerie.

“I still don’t get what the big deal is.” I stopped moving as Ikta came to a sudden stop in front of me. Her long dark hair went all the way to the curve of her ass, apparent through the thin cloth she called a dress.

“Close your eyes,” the fae queen of the Wilds and a notorious trickster demanded.

I glanced at all of my ladies around me, realizing there was little she could do to me with all of them around. Although she’d dumped me into a portal before, so I couldn’t put anything past her. Ikta was crazy, but we’d settled some of that when I’d made a promise to her: her and a pool of nymphs within the next year and a half.

I eyed her as she smiled ever so sweetly back, a bit of a sparkle in her eye. She was excited about something, but she’d been on good behavior ever since we’d struck a deal. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt.

“Fine.” I pressed my eyes closed.

Her power glowed purple; I could see it through my eyelids.

“Please don’t shove me through a portal,” I grumbled.

“She won’t.” Morgana’s hand fell down on my shoulder.

“Course not. Open them. Look at my wedding present!” Ikta sounded excited, which I had to admit terrified me a little at what I was about to see.

I opened my eyes to see a big, ornate front door through a portal with Ikta to the side, gesturing wildly at it. “What’s this?” I asked.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 7

Music thumped in the distance. Even in the limo, we could hear the music. Chloe had the biggest grin on her face as she sat next to me.

I took a moment to soak up the blue dragon in her human form. Her straight, black hair was pulled back but still loose as it cascaded down her back heavy enough that it wasn’t all over the place despite the kissing we’d been doing.

Her lips were a little redder than normal as she bit them, made only more obvious with her pale skin. “Thank you for this, I know the concert isn’t exactly your scene.” Chloe searched my eyes.

I kissed her again. “Pretty sure I was the one to get the tickets. This was my idea.”

Chloe was in a torn, white shirt with ‘One-Two Shockers’ stretched across her chest, and jeans that had more holes than fabric. To complete the look for the concert, she had on a pair of chunky studded bracelets.

She was the youngest of the dragons that made up my honor guard. The dragons at the conclave had wanted them to guard me, but also to join my harem and hopefully speed up the potential repopulating of dragons. Their numbers were still sorely low from a war that had spread across Europe hundreds of years ago.

The honor guard became my dragonettes, originally six, joined by Regina to make seven. They still stuck largely to their goals of protecting me, yet increasingly they were joining my bed, and the dragon part of me preened at having a harem of dragons to go home to every night.

As the youngest of them, Chloe was all spunk and, apparently, more than a little punk as I’d come to figure out her love of heavy metal concerts. Though, young was an interesting qualifier when it came to dragons. Chloe was in her eighties even though she had the body of a young twenty something.

Beastblood - The Lost Heir Part 8

I turned my hand over, creating a curved wall of ice that stopped the geist from being able to run. The sun had set, but with my shifted eyes, I could make out the glimmer of magic.

The geist had created faint barbed wire out of magic all over the woman’s body, cutting into her as it controlled her.

I rubbed at my forehead as the paranormal looked left and right, trying to figure out a way to escape.

“You need to leave her body.” I told the geist.

“No!” It wailed and made the windows in the alley rattle. “I will not. She’s mine.”

The barbed wire tightened further, and the woman bled all over.

A terrifying image was thrown into my head, but clearing that attack was nothing compared to resisting demon and fae glamor. I pushed the nightmare out with a thought.

“Oh. Are we going to do that? Let me try.” My draconic aura blasted out of me.

I’d gained more control since I’d accidentally sent my aura out into a crowd, making them all panic. The biggest problem I had now was that the intensity of my aura could easily just kill the human host the geist was using if I wanted to attack it.

But make it afraid? I could do that relatively safely.

“No!” the geist screamed, becoming distracted enough that I could summon a glowing gold ball of summer fae magic.

I targeted the barbed wire and geist with the light. It tried to dodge out of the way, abandoning its host, but I was getting better at using my abilities. I opened a portal right in front of the geist, delivering it into the ball of summer fae magic.

The undead didn’t even make it all the way out of the portal before it turned into a fine glowing powder that fell into the alley.
