The only novel written by the playwright Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, is at the same time an aestheticist story and a thriller.

Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution.

Nowadays, we know that despite its famous anti-moralist preface and its gothic contents, it still is in certain regards a moral tale – a very fascinating one.
