ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is set in Nazi Germany and follows Liesel Meminger, a young girl sent to live with foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann, during World War II. Narrated by Death, the story explores Liesel’s love for books and her acts of stealing them as a way to cope with the horrors around her. Through her relationships with Hans, Rosa, her friend Rudy, and a Jewish man named Max hidden in her basement, the novel explores themes of the power of words, loss, friendship, survival, and the complex nature of humanity during wartime.
