History
The Renaissance, meaning "rebirth" in French, marked a profound transformation in art, culture, and thought that began in Italy during the 14th century and spread across Europe over the following centuries. It is often regarded as the bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, a time when the classical ideas of ancient Greece and Rome were rediscovered and became central to European culture. The Renaissance was not merely an artistic movement; it was a period of intellectual, scientific, and cultural awakening, laying the foundation for many aspects of the modern world.
This period saw the decline of medieval feudalism and the rise of a more urban, human-centered society. It was characterized by an intense interest in humanism, which focused on the value and agency of the individual, the importance of education, and the study of classical texts. Humanists believed that by studying the works of ancient philosophers, writers, and artists, they could better understand human nature and improve society. This intellectual revival gave birth to new ideas in philosophy, politics, literature, and art that reshaped European culture.
The Renaissance was also marked by a revival of interest in the visual arts. Artists sought to depict the human form with greater accuracy and realism, drawing on the techniques and principles of classical antiquity. The development of perspective, for example, allowed artists to create the illusion of depth and space on a two-dimensional surface. This innovation transformed painting and sculpture, making it possible to capture the world in a way that had never been done before.
