The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi asking him to clarify his nationality after BJP MP Subramanian Swamy alleged that Gandhi is a British national. The letter said that Gandhi had declared his nationality as British in an annual returns statement filed by a British company named Backops Ltd. The MHA has given Gandhi 14 days to file a response.
And the trouble for the Congress President doesn’t seem at an end. Rahul Gandhi issued an apology to the court, for wrongly stating that the Supreme Court had also said, “chowkidar chor hai”. Gandhi had been charged with contempt of court after a case was filed by BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi over his statement. In his response he also stated that he had no intent of dragging the court into the political arena and that Lekhi was only seeking political mileage out of the entire issue.
The Election Commission suspended five polling officers in West Tripura for allegedly abetting booth capturing and attempting to further the prospects of some specific candidates winning. The EC is also likely to announce a repoll in at least 130 booths of the West Tripura constituency.
While the rest of the country was surprised when the BSP-SP-RLD alliance announced that they would be fielding former BSF constable Tej Bahadur Yadav, AAP chief and Delhi Cm Arvind Kejriwal praised the jawan for standing up to Modi.
If you remember, Tej Bahadur Yadav was dismissed from the BSF in 2017 after a video of him complaining about the quality of food served to the forces, went viral.
And the drama in West Bengal continues. CM Mamata Banerjee called Prime Minister Modi “shameless” for his claims, that about 40 TMC MLAs were in touch with him and would switch sides once the BJP won the elections. She also said that Modi’s candidature should be cancelled for engaging in horse-trading.
And finally, updating our total list of black money and freebie-seizures, the Election Commission seized cash, illicit liquor, drugs and other freebies worth more than 3,274 crore in the fourth phase of the elections on 29 April.
