Though the creators of these works remain unknown, their significance is clear: they were the first attempts to capture the world around them and communicate through images.

In the beginning, art was primarily functional. It was often used in religious or ceremonial contexts, as seen in the artifacts of ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. The Egyptians, for example, created intricate tomb paintings and sculptures meant to honor gods and preserve the soul in the afterlife. This period also saw the creation of monumental architecture, such as the pyramids, that combined art and engineering to create awe-inspiring structures designed to transcend time.

As civilization progressed, so too did the role of art. In Ancient Greece, art began to evolve from purely symbolic forms to more realistic representations of the human figure. The Greeks introduced the concept of ideal beauty, which emphasized proportion and symmetry. Sculptors like Phidias and Praxiteles focused on human anatomy, creating works that depicted gods and athletes with lifelike accuracy. These early Greek artists laid the foundation for much of Western art’s principles, including perspective, proportion, and the portrayal of the human form.
