ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood tells the story of Offred, a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that has overthrown the United States. Offred is forced into sexual servitude, her sole purpose being to bear children for the ruling class. The novel explores the themes of power, oppression, and resistance as Offred navigates her life within this oppressive society. The narrative focuses on the dehumanization of women, the use of religion as a tool for control, and the importance of individual will in the face of injustice. While Offred's tale unfolds, the reader is also made aware of the importance of memory and storytelling, with Offred risking her safety to record her experiences.
