Then, to make matters worse, he was advised by two officers to keep his illegal marriage to himself and forget about it because if he didn’t, it would probably ruin his life, both in the military and as a civilian, especially if the Navy gave him a dishonorable discharge. But the burning question he kept posing to himself was this, how could he ever attempt to forget the absolutely greatest thing that has ever happened to him? While he lay there trying to work things out, he figured he could run away from the hospital and try to get back to her, but what the shit, he was in Japan, what good would that do? And what if he did desert? In the end he resigned himself to the inevitable, he was going to the States and that fact was indisputable.
